Hi All
Shabbos was nice. On Friday night Gidon and I went to a couple named Barry (lawyer) and Debby (PR consultant). They are New Yorkers who made aliyah, live in the German Colony, and do amazing chesed work, like setting singles up, etc. They invited me and Gidon over along with 3 other newly-wed couples. (Ilana: Barry's sister is Vivian, the woman who started the MA program at JTS and whose books I've seen you read.)
Shabbos lunch we went to a blond-hair, blue-eyed, young couple with 2, blond-hair, blue-eyed kids. They were kind and down-to-earth. We came home and slept for many hours, a luxury most of you no longer have.
Saturday night, I pushed Gidon out the door to hear a lecture on medicine and halacha in Ramot. He hates leaving me at home, but I bribed him by telling him that I'd iron his shirts if he went. Am I not the best wife?
While ironing, I listened to a short-story by Isaac B. Singer. Truly, truly brilliant. You all MUST listen to it. Here is the link:

Am working from home today. Trying to write up some thoughts for Fried and Tuma re. my dissertation. Am feeling a bit sluggish, though, but am propelled forward by a great line I read this morning: "A good dissertation is a done dissertation."
Lots of love, Hyla

I'm very familiar with the tyranny of the blank page from the writing that I do (grants, papers). Nothing is so hard as those first written sentences (which I generally get rid of once I've written the rest because they are so lousy). But keep the faith and keep pushing on.
ReplyDeletei grew up with singer...in yiddish...believe it or not. i love his writing. i will check out the site.

yes -- mommy: please send me the step-by-step guide to ironing. i basically make up my own system and it works nicely, but there could be a faster way.
