anyone familiar with toronto knows that thornhill is buzzing with the activities to do with preparing for shabbat. sobey's grocery store is packed. the bakeries are full, flower shops have extra stock, kids are eating pizza in the kosher pizza shops so as not to bug their busy parents.
but i have another t.o. thornhill to tell you about.
friday, i was looking for a better cabbage to make "clow slaw" for my shabbos guests, sarah and shayna paskowitz. i had no luck in the usual places but decided to hop into the t & t supermarket only 6 minutes away. i had been in there only once before. this is an authentic asian supermarket with items such as sweet tamarind, bamboo sugar cane , lotus suger root, opo, xin jiang melon, as well as bok choy choices like shangai, boy, sprout, tak bou, etc. every item is nicely labeled. as i could not recognize many of the fresh food items i started reading labels. the best labels were: golden bell pappa and spinach-loos.
the store was teeming with asians busily buying for the weekend. beautiful chinese music played while i shopped, all signage was also chinese. ready made food looked like the food channel and the fish counter....that i won't describe.
so, t.o. is indeed a true multicultural city. i just didn't expect china town 6 minutes away.
i must find out how to say gut shabbos in chinese for my next trip to the t&t supermarket.
sarah loved the clow slaw.
love to all, mom

i love t & t market! the only problem is that you can smell the fish from the old navy above it.
ReplyDeleteSounds great! The weirdest cultural melange in Chicago is in Rogers Park, a neighborhood where chassidim and muslims in traditional dress frequently pass each other in the street. The kosher Pizza place ('Tel Aviv Pizza') is next door to 'Hajji Travel'. Gotta love this continent!
